Meghalaya’s main government-specialized institution is Shillong Polytechnic. It’s ideal for higher education, located on Shillong’s outskirts and bordered by gentle slopes to the north. North Eastern Hill University, a km distant, adds academic atmosphere. Shillong Polytechnic is 5 kilometres from the state capital in Mawlai Kynton Massar, Shillong-22. The Meghalaya Director of Higher and Technical Education oversees the Institute. The composite State of Assam established Shillong Polytechnic in October 1965. The foundation first used the Tribal Research Institute’s office spaces as study halls, labs, and a temporary shed for workshop rehearsals in Mawlai, Gaushala. At the time, thoughtful design was the major subject, and 60 students started each year. After a fire destroyed the Tribal Research Institute in 1968, Shillong Polytechnic moved to rented rooms and eventually to its current location.
The Meghalaya government took up the foundation when Assam split in 1972. Until 1993, the State Council for Technical Education Assam controlled its academic affairs. Shillong Polytechnic continually seeks to keep abreast of new technological advances to limit development, quality improvement, and overall institution performance.
